Broadband Grant: Public Computing Center at RLC proposal considerations

Who:
Tillman instructs, Stevenson Drives; Other teachers help with initial instruction and organization; Grant present in the building.

What:
After school and early evening student/parent remediation and then computer training sessions. Food and transport included.

When:
3:45 – 6:00 pm Thursdays, October 8th 2009 through May 27th 2010
Note: Grant applied for runs through 2012; data will be kept on attendance all three years.
1st session:
Oct: 8,15,22,29
Nov: 5,12, 19
Dec: 3,10,17

2nd session:
Jan 7,14,21,28
Feb: 4,11,18,25
Mar: 4, 11

3rd session:
Mar: 18,25
April: 1,15,22,29
May: 6,13,20,27

Rough Timeline:
3:30 -3:45 to 4:45: Selected Students stay after with teachers for snacks and one hour of remedial work on Study Island computers.
  • Note: Getting the students snacks and escorting them to the Study Island area and started on remediation will be provided by teachers who are signing up for the Differentiated Pay for student mentorship during the year. Mr. Tillman is responsible for guided instruction starting at 4:00 pm.
  • From 4:00 to 6:00, Tillman will work with students and their parents who can come in at this time on Computing Skills/Appropriate Internet use and research for Asheville Area Activities/Job Search.
  • 4:15-4:45: Mr. Stevenson will drive the RLC activity bus to pick up parents who do not have transportation.
  • 4:45-5:00: light snack
  • 5-6:00: Intensive instruction on internet use and local area applications for parents and students by Tillman
  • 6:00 -6:30: Stevenson drives parents home

Where:
RLC Computer classroom

Why:
  • To address Community and Parent Involvement component of School Imp. Plan and to also local option ABC’s.
  • To continue to build relationships with RLC parents and to promote mutual skills academically and in relevant internet skills for students and their parents.
  • To strengthen 21st job skills for students and their families, which strengthen their social and economic opportunities.


Actions to be completed before first session if grant is awarded:
  1. Meeting with all staff involved to ensure that:
    1. Monies have been placed in checking account to pay staff and purchase foods, or to be sure how we gain access to those monies to pay staff by month.
    2. Coordination of efforts between staff for supervision, food pick up, and driving.
    3. Creation and discussion of all forms parents and students need to sign, including AUP forms.
  2. Lesson plans and scope and sequence for three 10 week sessions of relevant computer and internet skills and activities: Tillman.
  3. Planning and integration of this activity with the Diff Pay Plan teachers who will be assisting the start of the class – Grant.
  4. Planning for snack to be left at start of session (from Food Services federal funds): coordinated between Grant and Cafeteria Manager, Ms. Smith.
